Your first self-defence workshop: what to bring

On a first visit, familiar clothing and a clear space make it easier to concentrate. A little preparation before you leave home will make the opening exercise more comfortable.

Wear something familiar

Choose trousers and a top that let you take a long step and lift your arms. Try a squat at home to check the fit. Bring clean indoor trainers. You will not need boxing gloves or a club uniform for this introductory workshop.

Deal with the small things

Empty your pockets of keys and your phone before starting partner work. Remove jewellery that might catch as you move. Keep your water bottle where you can reach it, outside the practice area. Taking care of these small details avoids unnecessary interruptions.

Preparation also means agreeing a few ground rules

Check the address for your particular session and allow time to change your shoes. Put away jewellery and anything that might catch on your partner’s clothing. Keep your phone and keys outside the practice area. Water should be accessible without being left where people are moving.
At the start, ask which signal stops an exercise. You do not need to hide uncertainty: request another demonstration or a slower pace. Your partner is not there to surprise you or test how much you can tolerate. Good cooperation means following the agreed role and responding immediately to a request to stop. These habits matter more in a first session than remembering every movement perfectly.

Starting with a partner

Tell your partner what pace you would like to begin at. Ask the instructor how to pause if you would like to see the exercise again. One response repeated calmly and described in your own words can be more useful than rushing through several attempts.
